Situated at the Marsden Point Refinery near Whangarei, the New Zealand Refining Company is New Zealand’s only refiner of oil products and one of the most modern refineries in the world.

We process a wide range of crude oil types imported from key offshore markets as well as Taranaki, producing premium and regular motor gasoline, automotive and marine diesel, aviation and lighting kerosene, fuel oils and bitumens for the New Zealand market.

Almost half of our fuel production travels via our purpose-built 170-kilometre pipeline to Wiri in South Auckland for storage and subsequent distribution by road. The balance is transported by coastal tanker to destinations throughout New Zealand.

As well as being our largest customers, major oil companies BP, Chevron, Mobil and Shell are significant shareholders in the refinery. Other shareholders include a mix of both corporate and private investors.

Our high standards are reflected in our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 third party certification and our commitment to protecting the refinery’s unique environment at the mouth of the Whangarei Harbour. Clean air, clean water and low noise levels are number one priorities and our small team of ornithologists is dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of the rare New Zealand dotterel population which breeds on site.

With a staff of just over 300, strong relationships with local contractors and about 2,500 shareholders, the New Zealand Refining Company is very proud of the contribution we make to both the local community and the New Zealand economy.
