Inhabiting a sizeable piece of land as we do (1.195 square
kilometres) at the mouth of the beautiful Whangarei Harbour, we are
very conscious of any impact our operations may have on our
immediate surroundings.
We are committed to managing these operations to avoid, remedy
or mitigate any adverse effects on the environment and we achieve
this through our Environmental Management System (EMS), which is
certified to the ISO14001 standard. Our
pipeline route to the
terminal in Wiri, South Auckland has recently been certified to the
same standard.
Steps to protect our surrounding environment:
- The New Zealand Refining Company was the first company to enter
into a Negotiated Greenhouse Agreement (NGA) with the Government,
putting us on a path towards world best practice in managing
greenhouse gas emissions.
- Resource consents with strict limits are set and monitored by
the Northland Regional Council to ensure discharges from the
refinery, such as wastewater, do not cause unacceptable adverse
environmental effects.
- We support regular beach clean-up campaigns and Pohutukawa
Coast, which aims to protect New Zealand's native pohutukawa
and rata trees.
- Our onsite laboratory also carries out environmental testing
for the refinery.
