Pipeline

The Refinery Auckland Pipeline (RAP) received certification to ISO 14001 in 2006 for its Environmental Management System. The management system has been set in place to ensure that all aspects of work performed by staff, contractors and service providers will have minimal impact on the environment inclusive of landowners, public, flora, fauna and existing historical sites and infrastructure.

The 170-kilometre pipeline is a key asset not only for the refinery but also for the country as a whole. The single 10-inch wide pipe (250mm) carries diesel, petrol and jet fuel in controlled batches under farmland, towns and part of the Manukau Harbour to the Wiri Terminal in South Auckland. A small pipeline from Wiri is then used to supply Jet A1 product to Auckland International Airport.

The pipeline is buried along the entire route, leaving no visual impact on the environment.

With a potential volume of 9 million litres, about half of the refinery’s production is distributed via the pipeline. The balance is transported by coastal tanker and road to the rest of New Zealand.

The pipeline has recently been upgraded by installing additional pumping stations at Kumeu and Wellsford to meet the growing needs of Auckland.
