Risk
It is hugely important to us that we perform well in the areas of safety and security. We are committed to creating an environment where everyone working on our site goes home at the end of each work day, safe and secure.
Emergency Services
Our staff and contractor workforce have a real desire to drive our safety and security performance forward at all levels and are supported by a dedicated safety, emergency services and security team.
We now have a full time dedicated emergency services trainer and shift emergency serviceman as part of our well-trained specialist emergency response team onsite.
A number of the team have successfully completed their Level Two National Certificates in fire and rescue services and eight members of the team are now qualified in Urban Search and Rescue. (Ours is currently the only emergency services team north of Auckland to hold this qualification). The team has also been provided with specialist petrochemical fire fighting training.
We have successfully completed the first stage of a three-stage project to upgrade the existing fire main system onsite, while the installation of a hose layer on one of the refinery’s fire appliances has allowed the capability for 1.5km of 5-inch hose to be rapidly deployed and retrieved.
Oil spill readiness response
As part of our continuing oil spill readiness response, the Taranui, a purpose built oil skimmer vessel, is deployed every month for oil spill response team training. Our marine staff participate in exercise training at the Northland Regional Council while our Marine Controller attended National Oil Spill Response Team training.
All exercises train staff and ensure they are familiarised with equipment for use in different weather and sea conditions. The exercises also provide an important practical element in supporting and implementing the joint oil spill response plan.
