His Background
Greig has worked for NZRC for 35 years starting out as an electrician when the refinery was much smaller than it is today. Radio communication was virtually non-existant, so when the first portables were purchased, the electrical department took responsibility for maintaining them. Greig became even more involved in radio service and was part of a project to provide and maintain a site network. In 1988, he became an electrical supervisor and following a restructure ten years later, an Asset Engineering Controller. A steep learning curve followed, as Greig took responsibility for a team of fitters, scaffolders, laggers, electricians and instrument technicians all of whom were ‘first responders’ for most maintenance activities. His strong interest in the refinery’s Computerised Maintenance Management Systems saw him seconded to the Maximo project and this provided the footing for his current role. Says Greig, “I’ve found that if you show interest in technology and encourage change, NZRC will be very supportive in training: - to improve competence and personal development.”
About the role
Greig’s role is charged with driving and growing the efficient use of the Engineering Systems: - maximising their potential and ensuring consistent use across the refinery. This involves systems thinking, coaching and coordinating the training of individuals and groups in how to best to use these Systems, and their fit around business rules and accountabilities. “In other words, an understanding of the relationship between the maintenance business and the tools we use to run it.”
Outside of Work
Greig has enjoyed tramping and climbing. He holds a private pilot’s license, and takes pleasure in a round of golf. Fattening a few animals on a 10 acre block also keeps him busy.
